“3D Future Camera” Developed Jointly with KDDI Corporation

A state-of-the-art fully automated 3D scan studio introduced at SusHi Tech Tokyo 2024, where visitors experience the Tokyo of the future

Summary:

This was a programme held at Miraikan, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, offering visitors a taste of the Tokyo of the future. Using the 3D Future Camera we developed, the programme let visitors scan their own bodies and create a 3D model of themselves. The technology was developed jointly with KDDI, and delivered a new kind of experience: visitors could control their own avatar in a virtual space of the future and pose for a commemorative photo alongside a robot.

Point:

In the unstaffed 3D scan studio, the 3D Future Camera scans a user’s whole body at high precision, fully automatically, and instantly creates a 3D model of them. Animation is then applied to the resulting avatar automatically, so users can move their avatar freely within an original virtual space and enjoy a new form of commemorative photography.

Story :

The project draws on the technology behind WIDAR*, the app that performs 3D scanning and 3D editing with a single smartphone. By providing the proprietary 3D scanning algorithms and 3D editing platform developed for WIDAR, we made it easy to produce high-quality 3D models.

Installing a 3D scan model studio used to require an enormous budget. With our technology, high-quality 3D scan models can now be generated at low cost and fully automatically.

Through the 3D scanning technology we develop in-house, WOGO focuses on balancing the required quality against running costs, so that more companies and projects can adopt 3D technology.
