As generative AI advances, major changes are beginning to appear on the design and manufacturing floor. Recent examples such as “Claude x Fusion 360 MCP” combine generative AI with CAD, 3D data and design support tools, and it is becoming clear that some of the work people have always handled – design studies, design verification, documentation, use of accumulated knowledge – could be supported and elevated by AI.

Drawing on experience in research and business development across the 3D field and generative AI, this talk sets out in plain terms how today’s generative AI is advancing and why. It then examines the likely direction of technical progress over the next few years, and offers a projected timeline for the impact on design work and design management. Building on that, it introduces the themes manufacturers should start working on now, and how to think about adoption, in order to use generative AI to raise the level of the entire development process.
